Medical Care

As part of the admission process each student is required to submit a recent (within the past six (6) months) physical and dental examination conducted and signed by a licensed physician and dentist. At the time of admission, students will be assessed for evidence of drug or alcohol use. Blood and or urine screens will be administered when considered necessary.

A full-time registered nurse is available for care at Salem. A physician is on-call to the school 24 hours a day. Should visits to a physician be required, the costs incurred will be billed to the student’s insurance carrier. If insurance does not provide coverage, these medical bills will be the responsibility of the parents.

Consent for medical and dental services shall be the responsibility of the family. Consent, when possible, will be obtained prior to hospitalization, surgery, medical treatment, psychological (other than educational testing, psychiatric examination or dental services such as orthodontist, dentures, bridge work) as required.

In an emergency, if it is not feasible to secure the guardian’s consent of if (s)he cannot be located; SCH is authorized to arrange for medical care of the child, but shall notify the family promptly thereafter.

Parents should provide Salem with a list of the prescription drugs their child is taking prior to admission. Further, we ask that, at minimum, a 30-day supply be sent with the child entering the program. Parents are responsible for the costs of all prescription refills.
